7.9.17. Billings to Forsyth (110 miles)

A 4:15am wake-up this morning was necessary for two reasons: 1) (surprise) it was forecasted to be another warm day and 2) today was our first day on the trip riding more than 100 miles. The latter was not by accident. This also happened to be the flatest day of the trip thus far (only 700 feet of climbing across 110 miles). All in all, this was a favorable route to tackle this distance.  Per our host's advice, we stuck primarily to the frontage road that snaked north of I-94. Eventually, the frontage road broke away from the interstate, and we found ourselves riding through the dry rural eastern Montana countryside. Throughout this entire day, we rarely encountered traffic. In fact, it was the least we've experienced thus far during the trip. By 9am, it had reached the low 80's and by 11am the low 90's. We stopped in Hysham for lunch, and from there rode the remaining 27 miles to Forsyth. These final 27 miles were the longest due to the heat which, by this point, was near or slightly above 100 degrees. We arrived in Forsyth at 2:30pm or so, and decided to have a motel night to get a break from the heat. Besides, a campground without a shower and an abundance of mosquitos could hardly convince us to decline staying in an air conditioned motel for the evening. We had an early dinner at Fitzpatrick's, a restaurant that touted itself on Irish cuisine. What it may have lacked in Irish cuisine it made up for in food that was otherwise great tasting. After short nap induced by a food coma, Dairy Queen seemed like a good way to top off the evening. Per usual, a somewhat early start was necessary to avoid the heat over the upcoming day.
